The citizens of Greendale thought there was an alpaca on the loose in town and alerted the authorities. But what they actually spotted was a white deer named Penelope.

The police got the word out on social media that the public need not be concerned by this albino animal among them. Although she’s not your average deer, she is just out there doing average deer things.

As it turns out, Penelope is something of a celebrity in the area. Locals commented on the post about their encounters with her in the past and shared their photos and videos. And while nobody knows who named her, her moniker has stuck in the community.

Her coloration is most likely caused by a rare genetic condition. Needless to say, deer like Penelope don’t come around very often.

Now, there are bound to be a few hunters out there whose curiosity has been piqued by the presence of such an unusual deer. But, before you get any funny ideas about hanging a striking trophy over the fireplace, know that white deer are considered sacred in many cultures and are therefore protected in Wisconsin.

Native Americans believe they are a sign of good fortune. In Celtic mythology, they are believed to be messengers from the otherworld who may appear when a taboo is broken. Others suggest a sighting is a reminder of one’s faith or that seeing a white deer is a sign of change on the horizon, which can be good or bad.

With all that in mind, would you even want to bag a white deer? It certainly seems like the potential for a curse or some cosmic retribution is rather high. And with the playoffs on the horizon and games still remaining against the Bears and the Vikings, you wouldn’t want to bring that kind of heat on the state of Wisconsin.

So, let’s all agree to leave Penelope alone and let her frolic in peace. And let’s hope that she remembers to look both ways before crossing the road.
